Camille AndrewsIn this post, we introduce our new instruction & research librarian, Camille Andrews!

Name: Camille Andrews

Title: Instruction & Research Librarian

What does your job entail?

I’m responsible for helping the W&M community in general and the chemistry, physics, geology and computer science departments in particular with their information and research needs through reference, instruction, and outreach.

What interests you most about your job?

I love connecting and collaborating with patrons on their research; it’s always fascinating seeing what questions and interests people are pursuing. I’m also passionate about teaching and learning with them about literacies of all kinds--information, media, data, digital, making and more. The information landscape is always evolving, and I get excited about helping others navigate it and the continuous learning and discovery that it involves.

What do you hope to accomplish in your first year?

I’m looking forward to getting to know the W&M community and the departments I work with and seeing what their information and research goals and needs are and how I can help them fulfill them.

Tell us a little about your work background:

I started out in scholarly publishing and then eventually found my way to librarianship and spent about 17 years at Mann Library at Cornell University. I’ve done reference, research consultations, outreach and instruction in a range of subjects including the sciences, and most recently I was the Emerging Literacies Librarian. In that role, I focused on instruction and outreach for the library’s makerspace, teaching students not only how to find, manage and evaluate information, but also use it to create and communicate through posters, video, 3D modeling and printing, virtual reality and more. I’ve also worked on assessment and new learning technologies, and am interested in user experience, design thinking, online learning and instructional design.

What attracted you to W&M?

I’m an alum from the class of ’96 (and a former library student worker) so I know how great, close-knit, and committed to teaching, learning, research and outreach the library and the William and Mary community as a whole are.  I’m looking forward to being back and closer to family and getting to know Williamsburg again.

What do you like to do in your free time?

When not working, I’m usually watching things, reading books (often science fiction or fantasy), and listening to music, so feel free to come chat with me about the latest in Marvel media, books from authors like NK Jemisin or Tamsyn Muir, or music from artists like Janelle Monáe.
