What’s New at Swem This Fall?

You can expect big things from Swem and its branch libraries in the coming months because we have been BUSY this summer. Not only will we be offering new services like myLibrarian, a personal librarian program for incoming first-year students, but we have a new overhead scanner that anyone can use.

This scanner has lots of options and is easy to operate.  No user ID necessary! It's located on the 1st floor across from the Writing Resources Center/Tutor Zone service desk.  It can handle oversized materials up to 17 x 24 inches in black and white, grayscale, and color. It can also scan two pages at once.  There's even a foot pedal to operate the device if your hands are full. You can send scans to any email address (not just the W&M one) or save them to a flash drive.  Save paper (and the environment) as well as printing costs with this new scanner.

Make sure to visit the newly renovated music library. In addition to some comfortable new furniture, we have two new Mac work stations with media editing software, a midi-keyboard station, a new flatbed scanner and more! Whether you need that audition piece in a different key or want to hear how Streisand sang it, the Music Library is at your service!

On top of all that, Swem and the branch libraries are getting rid of most overdue fines. Collections like videos and reserves will still have overdue charges for students and staff, so make sure you still pay attention to due dates. Also, you want to make sure you’re talking to Swem if ANY of your items are overdue, because replacement fees will be charged if your items are severely overdue.

That’s just a taste of what we’ve come up with so far.  Soon you can also expect new hours for Swem and updated borrowing practices (how long you take items out).
