Recalls

What is a recall?

To ensure that that materials are available to all of our patrons, we allow W&M students, faculty, and staff to request a recall of a book (not on reserve) checked out to another patron. Only faculty or those with faculty permission can recall videos.

To request an item be recalled, you should contact the circulation desk.  We may refer you to Interlibrary Loan depending on how quickly you need access to the materials or how long you need to keep the items.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Recalls change the due date of the item as follows:

Books

  • For books that have been checked out for less than 12 days, the new due date will be 7 days after the end of the initial 12-day period.
  • For books that have been checked out for 12 days or more, the new due date will be 7 days after the recall was placed.
  • If a recall is placed by the Reserves Desk, the new due date will be 7 days after the recall was placed.
  • If a recall is placed less than 7 days before the book's original due date, the due date will not change.
  • If a recall is placed on a book that is already overdue, the recall due date will be the next day.
  • Items not returned by the due date will be subject to replacement costs which include the list price of the item and a $20.00 processing fee.

Videos

  • Videos recalled on Monday through Thursday will be due on the day after the recall is placed.
  • Videos recalled on Friday through Sunday will be due on the following Monday.
  • If a recall is placed on the day that a video is due, the due date will not change.
  • If a recall is placed on a video that is already overdue, the due date will be the same day.
  • Items not returned by the due date will be subject to replacement costs which include the  list price of the item and a $20.00 processing fee.

A recall due date that would fall on a day that the library is closed will extend to the first following open day for books and the first open weekday for videos.
