The Cartoons of Hugh Haynie
Hugh Haynie was born in Reedville, VA, in 1927. As a young man, he joined the Coast Guard, and after World War II, he attended the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1950. While a student, his interest in cartooning blossomed through his contributions of cartoons to the Flat Hat. After graduation, Haynie turned his cartooning into a career, working for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Greensboro Daily News, and the Atlanta Journal. In 1958, he was hired to work for the Louisville Courier Journal, where he remained until he retired in 1996. Haynie's cartoons featured issues ranging from civil rights to environmental issues, and featured both local and national politicians, as well as many other known and unknown figures. Haynie won several awards for his cartoons, including the Headliner Award in 1966 and the Freedoms Foundation Medal in 1966 and 1970, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1970. Upon his death, Haynie left the bulk of the originals of his cartoons to the College; they are kept in the Special Collections Research Center at Swem Library.
On this website, you will find examples of Haynie's cartoons ranging from his time at the College through his many decades at the Courier-Journal. As you look through these pages, enjoy the detailed artwork and clever use of rhyme and wordplay as well as the humorous skewering of political figures and issues that Haynie was so well-known for. One other thing to look for: Haynie often hid his wife's name, Lois, somewhere in his cartoons.
