Cotton Mather's Account of the Tryals of the Several Witches Lately Executed in New-England (London, l693), written at the request of the judges in the trials, defended the justice of the verdicts. Mather's connection to the witchcraft trials has been a matter of much debate. He originally felt punishment milder than execution might be imposed. This work is one of the classics of a tragic chapter in Massachusetts' history.
