St. George Tucker's tract, titled A Dissertation on Slavery (l796), is an early attempt by a Virginian to eradicate the curse of slavery. His pamphlet, although tabled at a meeting of Virginia's General Assembly, represents a spirit of abolitionism in the Commonwealth before Nat Turner's rebellion.
