Poems on Various Subjects by Phillis Wheatley (London, l773) marked the first volume of poetry published by an African-American. Phillis Wheatley was born into slavery but because of her precocity was given every advantage by her white owners. A trip to London resulted in Phillis Wheatley's publication of this work under the patronage of the Countess of Huntingdon.
