Name Index to the Bucktrout Daybook and Ledger with Biographical Data

By Carol Kettenburg Dubbs

This index is to names in the Bucktrout Daybook and excludes names on the loose papers associated with it. Page numbers are those of the manuscript. Where biographical information is available, it is included. The following principles apply:

  • All states are abbreviated by postal code. All places with no state indicated are in Virginia.
  • Most birth dates given as circa (e.g. c1800) are estimated from census ages given, which are often inaccurate and can be contradictory from one census to another. Places following birth dates are birthplaces, most of which come from the census.
  • Death dates of burials recorded in the daybook are not given unless confirmed by another source, such as a headstone or the Virginia Gazette.
  • Names in parentheses are alternate spellings in the daybook; names in brackets are common spellings or census spellings, or known names, such as middle or maiden name, not stated in the daybook.
  • When a relationship is indicated (e.g. brother of _______), the person mentioned, in most cases, is also listed in the index.
  • Slaves' owners are not always possible to know for certain but are assumed to be whoever is financially responsible. All slaves named are cross-referenced with presumed owners.
  • All dead soldiers are buried in City Cemetery (Cedar Grove) unless otherwise stated.
