7 Society

The 7 Society is a student secret society at William & Mary.

Alumnus James Allan Cook was listed as a member of the 7 Society at William & Mary in the 1928 Colonial Echo yearbook. In a letter to the Society of the Alumni in 1974 Cook stated: "From the best of my recollection, the "7" club was a social club - without clearly defined purposes - and meeting times." Whereas alumnus Art Matsu recalled in a letter that same year: "Emphatically it was the farthest from being a social organ, having seven senior members, selected annually from the succeeding junior Class, who seemed best qualified to act on the undergraduate level in the best interests of The College in student matters deemed not important enough, or best to be handled on a contemporary basis, rather than surface to the Administrations attention, - which might be less understanding." Matsu continues on to discuss the organization in his two-page letter and there are further comments on the organization from member Kenneth Beatty.
