Chapin-Horowitz Collection
The Chapin-Horowitz Collection is the second largest collection of books about dogs in the United States. An evolving collection in several languages, it contains scholarly works dating back to 1537 as well as children's literature, breed guides, and publications of the American Kennel Club.
It began in 1937, when Howard M. Chapin, a librarian at the Rhode Island Historical Society, donated approximately 3000 volumes to the library, along with a small endowment. The collection grew again in 1988, when Murray and Shirley Horowitz donated their collection of over 6000 volumes, creating the Chapin-Horowitz Collection. Books continue to be added to the collection, through its endowment and through donations.
