Heritage Fellow

The Heritage Fellow award at William & Mary recognized faculty excellence in teaching. It was established during the administration of President Davis Y. Paschall.

Heritage Fellows

In September 1967, the Endowment Association established an endowment of $200,000 for the Heritage Fund, designed to provide stipends of $500 each for the Eminent Scholars of the faculties of the College of William and Mary who would be known as Heritage Fellows or Professors. The establishment of the endowment was announced at Charter Day in 1968 by Chancellor Alvin Duke Chandler.

The original Heritage Fellows were chosen by the Vice President for Academic Affairs after discussion with the Deans of the Schools and the Dean of Arts and Sciences. Their appointments requred final approval by the university's President. Under conditions of the Heritage Program, it was understood that they be senior members of the faculty, and that their appointments be permanent.

The first Heritage Fellows for the session 1968-1969 were: Royce W. Chesser, E. Rae Harcum, R. Wayne Kernodle, Bruce T. McCully, Fraser Neiman, Pierre Oustinoff, William R. Reese who was succeeded by Anthony L. Sancetta, Carl A. Roseberg, S. Y. Tyree, Jr., J. P. Whyte, Jr.

In 1974 the Heritage Fund was changed to instead establish one or two professorial chairs.
