Ice skating

References to ice skating at William and Mary or in Williamsburg, Virginia.

An alumnus recalled coming across a reference to College of William and Mary students ice skating on College Creek and they skated out to the James River and fell through the thin ice. They were pulled from the river, but one of the students died a few days later. The alumnus seemed to recall that this happened circa 1828-1832. No reference could be found to such an incident in the following sources searched: Subject files on student activities, chronology, B&G-Lake Matoaka; Provisional List--looked for 170 FA files of students who were at W&M and grammer school during that time; 1993 history of W&M; BOV; Faculty minutes; Cows on Campus by Parke Rouse; College Papers collection; Mary Goodwin's Historic Notes index; We don't have Virginia Gazette for those years.
