James Hardy Dillard

James Hardy Dillard was appointed by Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis to the College of William and Mary Board of Visitors in 1918. He served until 1940. He also served as Rector of the Board of Visitors from 1919 until 1940. Dillard was well-known for his work to improve the quality of education in the South, particularly for African Americans.

Hardy's portrait hangs in the Botetourt Gallery in Swem Library. A video tour of the gallery is available via YouTube.
