The Flat Hat celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The Flat Hat has been William & Mary’s student newspaper since the first issue on October 3, 1911. It covers the College and the surrounding area of Williamsburg, printing on Tuesdays and Fridays of the academic year. The Flat Hat is produced entirely by a volunteer all-undergraduate staff. The student journalists control all online and print content. The production of the paper is not supervised by any faculty or College administrator. This exhibit displays selected issues of the Flat Hat and its offshoots, The Straw Hat and the High Hat. Controversies reported by the Flat Hat are also showcased.

Curator: Jean Sibley, Serials Librarian; assistance from Steven Bookman, University Archives Specialist; Exhibit design and installation: Jean Sibley and Chandi Singer, Burger Archives Assistant.
