Visit Us

Special Collections is open to all researchers for onsite research, but with limited capacity in our reading room. We strongly encourage requesting an appointment to ensure that we will be able to accommodate your visit. We may need to limit your appointment to two hours depending on demand. Please email us at spcoll@wm.edu with requests for appointments, research consultations, and any other questions.

Before You Arrive:

Say hello! To get the most out of your visit, check the Special Collections calendar for our Reading Room hours and email spcoll@wm.edu to let us know when to expect you and ask any questions.

Check the William & Mary Parking & Transportation website for the latest information on parking and navigation on campus.

While You’re Here:

When you arrive, we will ask to see a valid photo ID and take your picture in order to complete your patron registration.

Before viewing materials in the reading room, we will provide you with a locker to store your personal belongings (food, drink, pens, notebooks), as well as special notepaper and pencils to use during your visit.

Patrons may use digital cameras in the reading room, with the following restrictions:

  • Images taken by researchers can be used for private research only, not for publication.
  • Use handheld cameras only, no tripods or scanners
  • No flash, as this can damage materials

Need a break? Aromas café and vending machines are available at the Swem Library entrance, and downtown Williamsburg is close to campus.

After You Leave:

Keep in touch! We are always happy to answer further questions, and we love to hear about how people are using the collections. We look forward to seeing you again!
