Visit Us

Beginning Tuesday, January 19, Special Collections will be open for onsite research by appointment only for current William & Mary faculty, students, and staff. We will accept appointment requests for Mondays-Fridays between 10am – 4pm and require two business days’ notice. Please email us at with requests for appointments, virtual research consultations, and any other questions.

At this time, we are unable to accept onsite researchers from outside of the William & Mary academic community to protect the health and safety of our campus. As feasible, we will digitize materials for both W&M and outside researchers in accordance with our copy policy, with priority given to internal W&M requests. Visit the W&M Digital Archive to access our digitized manuscript, university archives, and rare book collections.

Before You Arrive:

Say hello! To get the most out of your visit, email to let us know when to expect you and ask any questions.

Check the William & Mary Parking & Transportation website for the latest information on parking and navigation on campus.

While You’re Here:

When you arrive, we will ask to see a valid photo ID and take your picture in order to complete your patron registration.

Before viewing materials in the reading room, we will provide you with a locker to store your personal belongings (food, drink, pens, notebooks), as well as special notepaper and pencils to use during your visit.

Patrons may use digital cameras in the reading room, with the following restrictions:

  • Images taken by researchers can be used for private research only, not for publication.
  • Use handheld cameras only, no tripods or scanners
  • No flash, as this can damage materials

Need a break? Aromas café and vending machines are available at the Swem Library entrance, and downtown Williamsburg is close to campus.

After You Leave:

Keep in touch! We are always happy to answer further questions, and we love to hear about how people are using the collections. We look forward to seeing you again!
