The often quoted lines "The children were nestled all snug in their beds / While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads" are frequently reenvisioned by modern illustrators to use festive foods recognizeable to contemporary readers. Food is the foundation of many Christmas traditions around the world, and it is interwoven into countless songs, poems, and illustrations. Clement C. Moore’s classic Christmas poem ’Twas the Night Before Christmas (or A Visit from St. Nicholas) places emphasis on food with its mentions of sugar plums and jelly, both foods that were once centered in American Christmas traditions.

This exhibit focuses on food traditions from countries around the world, many of which are alike. ’Twas the Night Before Christmas has been published in many editions, translated into several languages, and illustrated in numerous ways. Since the poem was first published over two hundred years ago, creative liberties regarding food have been taken, often in the form of stockings filled with candy and plates of cookies paired with a glass of milk. While neither candy nor cookies are mentioned in the poem, the frequent illustration of both show the importance of food tradition in celebrations and visualizations of Christmas.

Please note, the exhibit will only be open during the regular hours of the Strkyer Center, generally Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00, and with holiday closures based on Williamsburg Regional Library's schedule.
