Library resources can be accessed off campus by students, faculty and staff by using the campus proxy server. Most of our databases and links in the catalog are automatically configured to use the proxy so you can access them when you're not on the main W&M campus.
If you need to embed a link to a library resource in Blackboard, make sure the URL is prefixed with the address of the proxy server: http://proxy.wm.edu/login?url=. For example, a link to JSTOR would look like: http://proxy.wm.edu/login?url=http://jstor.org. You can also use any of the links in our library database list.
Having problems accessing materials off campus?
Make sure the link you're using has the proxy address in it. You may want to try accessing the database by using our list of databases and following the links there. If you continue to have problems, please contact us or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Learn more about the proxy server and why we use it in this guide.
Need to connect to your H drive or desktop from off campus?
W&M IT provides several services for accessing your desktop and network drives, including your H drive from off campus. For help with these services, please contact the IT support desk.
- For Students
W&M IT provides instructions on connecting to campus resources remotely through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Instructions for installing and accessing the VPN can be found on the IT website at https://www.wm.edu/offices/it/services/network/vpn/index.php.
- For Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff can also use the VPN described above for students. In addition, IT also offers a Virtual Desktop for faculty and staff which allows you to either install a program to access your desktop and drives or view your desktop in a web browser. Instructions for accessing your virtual desktop can be found on the IT website at https://www.wm.edu/offices/it/services/network/virtualdesktop/index.php.
