From start to finish in 24 hours

Published on

Swem Library, in partnership with the William & Mary Global Film Festival, recently hosted the 10th annual 24 Speed Filmmaking competition. This competition is a thrilling race against time in which W&M students and alumni try to write, shoot and edit a short film within 24 hours.

This year’s event drew 22 film submissios – 11 in the student category and 11 in the alumni category! Each team was given a prop and line of dialogue to use in their film, as well as a genre for their film. This year, the line of dialogue was "Be My Fellow Explorer." It was chosen from the winner of last year's competition. The prop was a map. The festival theme was "journeys and passages," films that tried to tie in this theme had a better chance of winning the jury prize. Films also could be no longer than four minutes.

The films were screened as part of the W&M Global Film Festival on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the historic Kimball Theatre in Colonial Williamsburg. This year’s Jury Prize, selected by a panel of visiting artists and others, went to “I Love The Farm.” The audience award for the student category went to “Orange is the Warmest Color,” with “Increbidle Explorers” winning the audience award for the alumni category. Courtesy of Swem Library, the winning teams will be awarded up to 5 GoPro cameras for team members who are W&M students.
