Introducing Michelle Runyon, digital archivist

In this post, we introduce W&M Libraries' new digital archivist, Michelle Runyon!

Michelle RunyonName: Michelle Runyon

Title: Digital Archivist

What does your job entail?

I’m responsible for the born-digital and digitized content at the Special Collections Research Center. Born-digital archives are materials originally created in a digital environment, such as a Word document or an email. Digitized archives are materials originally created in an analog environment that are made accessible digitally.

What interests you most about this job?

I’m greatly looking forward to archiving web content from W&M. Web archiving is a big passion of mine and a big growing edge in archives and special collections. I’m also glad to aid in the transition to Islandora, which will host our digitized archival materials. Both feel vitally important in the present moment.

What do you hope to accomplish in your first year?

A big priority for me is establishing more policies and procedures around born-digital content. I want to deepen my involvement in the William & Mary community so I can learn how to provide the best service possible.

Tell us a little about your work background:

While I completed my Master’s in Library Science at UNC Chapel Hill, I held two different internships at Duke University’s Rubenstein Library. I most recently co-curated an upcoming exhibit about the history of Guantanamo Bay after the September 11th attacks and processed several collections related to the Dirty War/El Proceso in Argentina.

What attracted you to W&M?

All through my interview process, I felt like my future colleagues were warm and inviting. I could see myself collaborating with them to document the history of this amazing community. The campus is also beautiful.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love walking my two dogs, Vincent and Sarah. During quarantine, I have enjoyed improving my chocolate chip cookie recipe and trying a variety of new recipes. Ask me about baking challah! I also enjoy reading (an occupational hazard).

Anything else you’d like to share:

I am excited to settle into the area and to be part of the local community!
