Once upon a time, so all the stories go, there was a librarian and an English professor who wanted to not only save their students money on textbooks but also innovate their teaching. Luckily, the concept of open education was familiar to them both and they set out to create a curriculum that would support their teaching objectives and hopefully be easy on their students’ wallets.

December 4, 2018The collections budget of the university libraries is subject to enormous inflationary pressures for scholarly content. This issue is of supreme importance to universities around the globe, with libraries in many countries working on strategies to provide greater access to information without monopolizing their entire budgets on a small number of for-profit journal publishers. This year, we have worked with other universities in the state to analyze our own journal subscriptions, particularly those subscriptions which we have with the top academic publishers in the world. -
October 19, 2018October 21 is the start of Open Access Week, that time every year when we salute all things open access. This year, W&M Libraries is focusing on Open Education Resources (OER), which are freely accessible, openly licensed text, media, and other digital assets that are useful for teaching, learning, and assessing as well as for research purposes.
