New Acquisitions from India and Japan

Recently the Special Collections Research Center's collection has taken on a more international focus.  Specifically, we have recently collected documents from India and Japan, including

  • Radha Mohan Lall Diaries, 1916-1922:  Diaries of a magistrate from Jaipur, India, written primarily in English.
  • Books published in Japanese.  We currently have over 20 books that were written and published in Japan before 1900. They include books of poetry, books about the lives of women, textbooks, maps, history books, and much more.  We are currently purchasing more, and you can find them using the library catalog.
  • Mataichi Oonishi Diaries, 1931-1942: Diaries of a private in the 930th Manchurian Infantry Corps, Mataichi Oonishi. They include descriptions of his participation in the battles Japan fought in China, his life back home in Japan, and his service in the Japanese army in 1941 and 1942 during World War II.
  • Lucian W. Alexander Diary, 1942-1943:  Diary of Corporal Lucian W. Alexander while he was stationed in India during World War II.
  • 19th Century Maps of Japan.  We have recently purchased a map of Japan from the 1860s which includes roads, sea routes, and a fare chart for transportation by horse.  We have maps of Tokyo and Kyoto as well;  you can find all these in our Racial and Ethnic Ephemera Collection.

These are just some of the additions to our collection in the past year.  We also have records from various campus groups, such as the South Asian Student Association, the Japanese Cultural Association, and the Filipino American Student Association.  As always, you are more than welcome to visit us any time that we are open and look at these materials (and more!).
