Copyright and Use for Materials Submitted to the Digital Archive
Copyright and use permissions are an important part of submitting materials to the W&M Digital Archive . By specifying the conditions of use and access, creators can provide access to their research, writings and other creations while rights of ownership and protecting the content of their works.
The College of William and Mary is utilizing Creative Commons licensing to specify conditions of use for materials deposited into the institutional repository. The advantages of using Creative Commons include multiple levels of use and permissions for materials and the presence of a quick visual image that depicts the conditions of use of materials.
The options for the Creative Commons license are: 1) define permissions for commercial use; and 2) define permissions for modifications of your work. Those using works submitted to the digital archive will be required under the Creative Commons license to credit the author of the work.
Some materials created by individuals affiliated with the College of William and Mary prior to the implementation of the institutional repository may be scanned and added to the digital archive. In order to determine permissions from the author(s) of such works, every effort will be made to contact the author(s) to gain permissions.
Those authors who the College of William and Mary is able to contact will be asked to give permission regarding the rights assigned to the work by completing a W&M Digital Archive license form.
